About
CumulusLab began with a question — how do systems actually work? Everything since has been an answer in progress.
Where we come from
CumulusLab did not begin as a company. It began as curiosity.
Our roots are in the foundations of IT: networking, Linux, storage, virtualization, high availability. We learned how packets move through networks before we deployed containers, and we learned Linux before automating Linux. Years of ISP and enterprise production followed — real systems, real users, real outages, real consequences.
Then, around 2017, containers arrived, and shortly after, Kubernetes. For many it looked like another orchestration platform. To us it was the natural evolution of everything we had learned — networking, Linux, automation, and distributed systems finally connected into one coherent picture. We have been designing and operating cloud-native production platforms ever since.
What we believe
Technology should never be treated as magic. Every abstraction hides complexity, and good engineers understand what is hidden underneath.
That is why we do not teach technologies. We build understanding. Configuration files can be learned, documentation can be searched, and AI can generate YAML — but engineering judgment is earned through real systems and real responsibility. Our job is to make that judgment visible, measurable, and easier to build.
How we work
- Understand before you build. We find the problem before implementing the solution.
- Production reveals reality. The most valuable lessons come from real systems, and we bring those lessons with us.
- Documentation is engineering. If knowledge lives only in someone’s head, it does not exist.
- Simplicity scales. We choose the boring solution, even when the clever one is more fun to build.
- AI augments engineers. We use AI to remove repetitive work — never to replace critical thinking.
The mark
Our symbol is drawn from the letters C and L — not as two separate letters, but as one continuous shape. Engineering is connected: infrastructure to software, software to business, business to people. The shape stays open on purpose, because understanding is never finished.
